Hey there ladies,
Did you know that women are unlikely to apply for a job unless they meet 100% of the job requirements, whereas men will apply if they meet only about 60% of the requirements? Why are we so willing to hold ourselves back?
Imposter syndrome is a huge problem for women. That internal voice that tells you you’re not qualified for the job and it’s only a matter of time before everyone finds out. It’s absolutely insidious. And the causes of imposter syndrome start there and lead to nowhere you want to be. A tendency toward perfectionism, fear of failure, being unwilling to take risks, not getting high-profile assignments or promotions. Why does this happen? Because people can tell when you don’t feel confident.
So remember, when you hear that voice, carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man, as the expression goes. Don’t underestimate your abilities. Don’t sell yourself short. And if you’re lacking confidence, borrow some from Idris Elba! He seems to have plenty to spare.
