Lower Your Voice!

Hey there ladies

Here’s a true story: a number of years ago I had scheduled meetings with some colleagues in another office, and one of them I was meeting for the first time. I am only 5 feet tall, and when I walked into her office she had an unmistakable look of surprise on her face, and blurted out, “Your voice doesn’t match your height!”

Unfortunately it’s true: when your voice is in a lower register it naturally projects authority. Margaret Thatcher and Eleanor Roosevelt actually took voice lessons to learn how to speak in a lower, more commanding tone of voice.

It’s not however terribly healthy to try to artificially lower your voice, and can result in the dreaded ‘vocal fry.’ Instead, just be wary of speaking in the upper registers of your voice. Take a breath, slow down, and let your Voice of Authority come out.
