How to Stand Out at Work When You Want to Get Promoted

I hear this all the time: why is it the people who talk the loudest or schmooze the most who are getting promoted when I’m the one doing all the work? It doesn’t have to be that way. But it does require that you be willing to get out of your comfort zone in order to be noticed.

Here are three essential things that will have an immediate impact on your visibility:

  1. Network: No this is not brown-nosing. It’s a critical part of advancing your career because it’s not enough to just be an A-student. Take the time to get to know people outside of your department as well as in your industry. This is all part of developing a reputation. Because if you want to get promoted, you first have to be known.

  1. Talk About your Work: In her book Brag Better, Meredith Fineman talks about how to promote your accomplishments. And it doesn’t have to be hard. As Fineman says, “Bragging Better is using facts to shine and tell the truth about the work you’ve done. If you’ve done the work, you’re only sharing the facts.” So stop thinking it’s unseemly to publicize yourself. It’s not unseemly, it’s vital to your success.

  1. Show Your Confidence: The key to confidence is making yourself look confident. Dress in a way that makes you feel good about yourself and think about your body language. Show confidence by taking a power stance, putting a relaxed expression on your face, and holding your head high. You will not only look more confident but actually feel more confident by positioning your body this way.
